“SNL” closed out their landmark 45th season in an unusual way. Of course, because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the variety sketch comedy show has had to resort to virtual production, mostly relying on Zoom call parodies, as well as really cashing in on the talent of their younger cast who have a real knack for at-home production.
Here are three sketches you can’t miss from Saturday’s finale, hosted by the incomparable Kristen Wiig.
“Let Kids Drink”
We get it. Parents are home with their kids, full-time, every day. So parents want a little “me-time,” you know? But it’s no fun when you’re the only one on the sauce.
A simple “We Are the World”-type ballad, “Let Kids Drink” is a song for the whole family, including dogs. Because no one likes a party pooper.
“Another MasterClass Quarantine Edition”
There is a MasterClass for everything. Even Bog Igor has one. And for what? We don’t know. Chloe Fineman is “SNL”’s best talent acquisition in recent years. A bona-fide impressionist YouTuber, she’s perfect for comedy that goes beyond tiring cold-open political gags.
Fineman plays Emmy-winner and “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, as she “teaches” MC subscribers how to…journal? Make a sex joke about everything? Win an Emmy or two? It’s all there.
Next, Fineman’s peer Melissa Villaseñor plays John Mulaney, as he teaches students how to wear a suit. Fineman, then, returns as Britney Spears, in what is the best celebrity impression I have ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot.
“Eleanor’s House”
Aidy Bryant strikes again as Eleanor, a lonely woman who’s celebrating her birthday solo. She invites viewers into her colorful, animated, Disney channel-esque home, but some uninvited guests arrive, turning her imaginary birthday party into a house party from high school that went downhill fast.
Richard Carson, played by the ever-funny Kyle Mooney, and his wife Colleen (Heidi Gardner) crash the party, where Richard is arrested and Eleanor is told by the cops to get her life together. We could all use that advice!
That wraps up the 45th season of “Saturday Night Live.” No word yet from NBC, or Hollywood as a whole, whether physical production will be up and running for the Fall season.
