Reign Edwards, who plays in Amazon’s new series, THE WILDS, sat with us at BELLO as she discussed her time on the highly-anticipated show, what led up to it, and more. Filled with a dedication to portraying her character, the talented actress poured her heart and soul in front of the camera, and it shows.
Share with us the very first thought that went through your mind when you booked your role on “The Wilds.”
I was SHOOK (LOL), grateful to God, and super excited to be portraying the story of my character.
What was it about the role/series that drew you to it?
What drew me to this role is that the journey of love this character has is not a romantic one. My character’s journey in relation to love is about the love between sisters and the journey of finding out what love towards herself looks like.
On set, you play with other empowered women. What was your experience like connecting with them? Who was someone you truly connected with?
There were tons of laughs between everyone constantly, haha! We worked in some extreme conditions so anytime a laugh got in there it was great haha! And I feel like we all just did our best to support each other and take care of this project.
In what ways do you believe this show highlights women as equals to men in the film/tv industry?
Well, first I’d say that we have a cast of eight young women who came together and every single person carried their weight. The way in which the show was shot definitely wasn’t easy. It was hard work. We were subjected to the elements for most of the shoot. We’d get picked up between 3:45- 5am everyday and get back between 7-9pm and do it all over again the next day. We did a lot of our own stunts. We were actually hiking up cliff sides, swimming through ocean waves, sand sticking everywhere, freezing cold while being soaking wet. We did it all and worked together day in and day out to get the job done. Then on top of that the powerhouse women we had behind the scenes. Sarah Streicher, Amy Harris, and Jamie Tarses. The care and fight they had in creating the show along with the cast is a statement in itself and something I hope everyone feels as they watch the show to see that a show full of women is a powerful thing to witness.
What can the audience expect to feel/see when watching the show?
What comes to mind with this question is struggle. The audience can expect to not only see the struggle each of these adolescent girls have but feel it too. Every single character has a struggle and a pain that I feel audience members will yearn to heal.
Share with us the obstacles you faced and how you overcame them.
Obstacles that I have overcome have truly been with the support and love of my family. Whether it was advice or just talking through it.
How have your past roles shaped/prepared you for this one?
Yes and no. Yes, in the aspect of knowing that it was going to be a lot of hard work required. No, in the aspect that this show is abnormal compared to other shows. This show was filmed on location for the most part and has been my most physically demanding role yet.
If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
If we go the route in which we assume there is no cell reception then I’d say a lighter, canned food, and a sleeping bag.
When you aren’t acting, what do you like to do?
Well, throughout these Covid times I’ve actually spent my time with my family and learning. Also, thinking about what kind of impact I want to have. Thinking about the actions I take in life and how that can positively affect my family, myself and my community. I also took one of the many free college courses that were available to educate myself more. Started things that I have wanted to do for years and revisited a few things….such as language and music theory.
What do you believe is the key to success (and being nominated for 4 Emmy Awards) ?
I have to give glory to God first and foremost. I’m a firm believer in prayer and that even when God says no to things, it’s only because He’s has something better for you. I’m a walking example of that. Other factors are, putting in the hard work and really caring about what you do. Genuinely show love to every person you meet. Be grateful and humble. Don’t forget to believe in your greatness.
Has your family always supported your career?
Yes, they have. I am super blessed to say that. My mom, especially, drove all the way from Maryland to California when I was 11 years old so that my sisters and I could pursue our dreams. I wouldn’t be here without the prayer, love, and support of my Mom. Period.
What is your dream role?
Actually, I was just able to perform one of my dream roles. Im the lead in a film called Love You Anyway written and directed by Anna Matz. I really can’t wait for everyone to see it. Other dream roles I would love to perform would be an action packed character whether it be a superhero or villain or badass warrior or super agent. I would also like to play a no bullshit, bad ass business woman.
